A lifeboat is a small boat that is installed on the ship and is mainly used for the self-rescue of the people on board when the ship is in distress. Large merchant ships are required by law to conduct lifeboat drills on a regular basis. Both SOLAS and LSA stipulate that ships on international voyages must be equipped with lifeboats. Modern lifeboats carry an Emergency Indicating Position Radio Beacon (EPIRB) and a radar reflector or radar interrogator.
The lifeboat is the main lifesaving tool on the ship. It is a special lifeboat for the crew of the ship to rescue themselves or rescue people in distress at sea. An air box is installed under the inner seat plate to ensure that the boat is completely filled with water and will not sink. The boat is equipped with food, drinking water, emergency medicine, accessories, communication equipment and propulsion equipment such as sails, oars, and poles, and some are also equipped with motorized propulsion devices.

According to the structural material, it is divided into wooden lifeboats, metal lifeboats and fiberglass lifeboats. According to the structure, it is divided into open, closed and fully enclosed lifeboats. Lifeboats are propelled by oars, sails or machines, and those with more than 60 occupants are motor boats.

SOLAS and LSA have strict regulations on the equipment, strength, buoyancy, stability and unsinkability of lifeboats. At the same time, it is also required that the lifeboats on the passenger ship must be able to fall into the water within 30 minutes under normal weather conditions. The ship can be safely landed even in unfavorable trim or with 15° of heel on either side; lifeboats are to be arranged so as not to interfere with the operation and use of other lifesaving equipment, and all lifeboats are immediately available in emergency situations.
The bow of the lifeboat is marked with the name and number of the ship it belongs to, and the stern of the lifeboat is marked with the port of registry. The lifeboat is usually set on the hoisting equipment on the life-saving deck to facilitate the boarding of personnel and the rapid release to the water surface.
The fully enclosed lifeboat is a rigid closed top cover added on the basis of the open lifeboat, so that the occupants can be protected from cold and heat. Such lifeboats are more common in passenger ships, ro-ro passenger ships, oil tankers, chemical tankers, liquefied gas ships and other dangerous goods transport ships. The materials of the hull and rigid closed top cover of the fully enclosed lifeboat are flame retardant or non-combustible.
The crew can complete the collection and release work and paddle under the closed cover. There is a passage cover at the entrance of the closing cover, which can be clamped when opened, and the passengers can quickly reach the seat without stepping over the cross seat plate or other obstacles (for all the passengers of the cargo ship, the boarding can be completed within 3 minutes).
It is watertight when closed and does not leak significantly when the lifeboat capsizes. The access cover shall be openable and closed on both the inside and the outside.
A lifeboat with an air maintenance system is provided with an air supply valve cylinder and a visual indicator indicating supply air pressure in addition to the requirements of a fully enclosed lifeboat.
This lifeboat has certain airtight requirements starting from closing all access points and openings, the air inside the boat should be kept safe and suitable for breathing and the engine should be running normally for at least 10 minutes.
During this period, the air pressure inside the boat shall not be lower than the outside air pressure, nor shall it exceed the outside atmospheric pressure by more than 20 hPa.
Bulk liquefied gas carriers and tankers carrying hazardous chemicals should be equipped with lifeboats with air maintenance systems because of the need for breathing protection during emergency escape.
In addition to the requirements of a fully enclosed lifeboat, a fire-resistant lifeboat shall have an air maintenance system, and can protect the occupants from continuous oil fire for not less than 8 minutes when it is on the surface.
In addition to its non-combustible or flame-retardant hull and top cover, the fire-resistant lifeboat is also equipped with a water spray fire protection system. This system can pump water from the sea to spray the outside of the lifeboat and prevent flammable liquids from being pumped up on the surface when pumping.
Oil tankers, chemical liquefaction tankers and liquefied gas tankers whose loading flash point does not exceed 60℃ should use fire-resistant lifeboats.
The upper part of the fully enclosed lifeboat is provided with a closed fixed rigid canopy device, which protects personnel from wind, rain, sea water and scorching sun exposure in the boat, and has the function of self-righting.
The passage cover that can be opened and closed is convenient for the crew to enter and exit the lifeboat, the passage cover is closed to ensure that the lifeboat has good water tightness and thermal insulation.
The top of the boat is provided with a sprinkler cooling device. The top window on the fixed canopy device can allow enough sunlight to enter the lifeboat with the hatch closed.
