Lifeboat is a ship used to escape large sinking structures, such as cruise ships, merchant ships or planes that have landed in the water. Safeboats are only used in emergencies. The lifeboat must be durable, because passengers sometimes wait for a long time before they are rescued, many vessels are equipped with equipment to protect themselves from bad weather before rescue.
It may include a first aid kit, food, drinking water, and capturing rainwater tools and fishing equipment that can be used to send signals. Some lifeboats are prepared for self-help, which means they have materials such as navigation devices and small engines. About which things should be equipped on the boat, you can view our article to get more:
Shortly after the 20th century, people realized that the ship is equipped with enough lifeboats to accommodate all passengers on board. On April 15, 1912, the famous Titanic cruise sinking incident, only a lifeboat on board can only accommodate 1178 people. Unfortunately, this ship can accommodate more than 3,000 people.
The availability of lifeboats on larger ships and commercial vessels is governed by international, national and regional laws. Legislation generally requires ships to carry enough lifeboats to ensure that all passengers can be rescued; in some cases, the capacity requirements for such lifeboats will be more. In the United States, these requirements are usually overseen by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Lifeboats are regularly inspected by the crew to ensure they are operating in an emergency. Lifeboats are more common on larger commercial ships due to their larger size and equipment requirements.
Now you can start to understand the different types of lifeboats, each with their own advantages and designed for different environmental conditions and usage. But no matter what kind of lifeboat, there are some basic requirements that need to be met to qualify as a lifeboat.
These requirements are listed along with the LSA Code, which is enacted into law by governments around the world. The following are the conditions that are required to be complied with:
1. The lifeboat shall have sufficient stability and sufficient freeboard with all occupants.
2. The lifeboat should have sufficient strength to be able to fall into the water safely when it is fully loaded with members and tools. And in the case of 25% overload, there will be no deformation.
3. Approved by the relevant departments for special reasons, the length shall not be less than 4.9 meters. When the ship is fully loaded, its weight shall not exceed 20.3 tons.
4. The lifeboat should have a certain internal reserve buoyancy. To this end, an air box or rigid foam plastic should be used as a reserve float. When the boat capsizes, the boat itself should not sink and provide 7.5 kg of buoyancy for each passenger.
5. Each lifeboat should be tested for watertightness after construction and before painting. The weight of all passengers and tools in the boat should be floated on the water for 2 hours. The wooden boat should not penetrate into the water beyond the lower edge of the inner keel, the plastic boat should not exceed 30 mm, and the metal boat should not have water seepage.
6. The square coefficient of lifeboats should not be less than 0.64, and that of wooden boats should not be less than 0.6. The average sheer height of the lifeboat is at least 4% of the length of the boat, and the sheer shape is approximately parabolic.
Each type of lifeboat has its own characteristics, open lifeboats, partially enclosed lifeboats and fully enclosed lifeboats are designed for different environmental conditions and capacity requirements. Below are the different types of lifeboats.
Totally enclosed lifeboats are fully enclosed lifeboats with a rigid watertight outer shell, they provide maximum protection for the members. Totally enclosed lifeboats are designed to provide more protection for their members, and the rigid waterproof shell means they are better able to keep passengers safe and dry in adverse conditions.
Free fall lifeboats are fully enclosed lifeboats designed to be launched from a free fall davit. A free fall lifeboat is designed to be embarked by its full crew in its loading position in the same manner as a fully enclosed lifeboat.
The difference is in how they are launched. A free fall lifeboat simply releases its retaining hook and uses gravity to "fall" into the water. They are mounted on angular rails, so the process of "dropping" from the boat provides them with a forward element to help them run cleanly.
Because of their launch technology, they are subject to forces and dangers that other lifeboats do not experience. You will most often find a free fall lifeboat in a location where you need a quick evacuation in an emergency.
A rescue boat is a vessel between 3.8 meters and 8.5 meters in length, which is mainly used to rescue people from the water. Usually rescue boats are small boats and are launched from a single pylon, they have either outboard or inboard engines, depending on the boat.
Rescue boats are designed for rescue, so in addition to seating five people, there is room for a stretcher. Rescue boats are available on all vessels, and passenger vessels over 500GRT require at least one rescue boat per side.
A fast rescue boat is a boat with a length between 6 meters and 8.5 meters, which is also used to rescue people in distress at sea. A fast rescue boat must meet the same basic standards as a rescue boat, in addition to a certain speed requirement.
Fast rescue boats can be found on different types of boats, but the main use case is on passenger ships.
Of course, there are many other types of rescue boats at sea. Such as life rafts and other lifeboats used for various purposes. But since life rafts are inflatable and don't have their own propulsion system, I won't go into too much detail here.
We hope that your time on the boat will be smooth sailing, but it is important to have all the safety measures in place in advance for the unknown. Get everything ready before you sail so you can react quickly when the unexpected happens.
