The types of rescue boat


     a. Rescue boat

The length of a rescue boat should be not less than 3.8 meters and not more than 8.5 meters. A rescue boat has to be capable of making six knots maneuvering speed for at least four hours when it is loaded by its full complement of persons and equipment. Rescue boat also has to be capable of towing the largest liferaft carried onboard the ship with a speed of at least two knots.

     b. Fast rescue boat

A fast rescue boat is designed for launching and retrieving in adverse weather and sea conditions. The length of a fast rescue boat has to be not less than 6 meters and not more than 8.5 meters. A fast rescue boat has to be able to maneuver at a speed of at least 20 knots for at least four hours with three persons on board. When boarded by its full complement of persons and equipment, a fast rescue boat has to be capable of maneuvering with a speed of at least eight knots for at least four hours. A fast rescue boat has to be capable of towing the largest liferaft carried onboard the ship with a speed of at least two knots.

     

     d. Offshore rescue boat

Offshore Rescue Boats are part of SLS Support Operations. They are normally used to support club activities, events and are capable of 24/7 search and rescue.

     e. Fast rescue craft

A Fast Res­cue Craft (FRC), is a rela­ti­ve­ly small res­cue ves­sel gener­al­ly desig­ned for search and res­cue (SAR) duties. They are usu­al­ly ope­ra­ted by a nati­ons coast guard, off­sho­re indu­stry, or life­boat insti­tu­ti­on, and are inten­ded for inland and

off­sho­re environments.

The functions of rescue boat

 

The rescue boat, the most important life-saving tool in the vessel, rescues sailors in distress during an emergency by rescue operation. There are two functions of the rescue boat. Firstly, when people in danger drop into the ocean and are unable to swim, a rescue boat should be in a position suitable for saving one's life in such crisis situations.
 Secondly, the rescue boat provides a way of self-rescue for the ship's crew when they are facing a dangerous situation.

Rescue boat complies with the requirements of the 2006 Amendments to IMO SOLAS 1974 and LSA Code-MSC.218(82)&MSC.272(85)&MSC.320(89). The tests of which have been carried out according to IMO Resolution MSC.81(70) and MSC.226(82)  & MSC.274(85) & MSC.323(89) & MSC.321(89)"Testing of Life-saving Appliance".

What the difference between rescue boats and fast rescue boats?

The rescue boat and fast rescue boat are similar to the operation but the latter has other requirements that differ from the former. There are two different aspects such as construction and speed between rescue boat and fast rescue.

 

Different construction:

GRP rescue boat may be either rigid and inflated construction or a combination of both and shall not be less than 3.8m and not more than 8.5m in length.

Fast rescue boat shall have a hull length of not less than 6.0m and not more than 8.5 m, including inflated structures or fixed fenders.

 

Different speed:

Rescue boat: maneuvering speed of at least 6kn and maintaining that speed for a period of at least 4 hours.

Fast rescue boat: maneuvering at a speed of at least 20kn in calm water with a crew of 3 persons and maintaining that speed for at least 4 hours. A speed of at least 8kn with a full complement of persons and equipment.

 

What are the minimum and maximum lengths of the rescue boat?

 

The minimum and maximum lengths of the rescue boat are not less than 3.8m and not more than 8.5m in length. The rescue boat can carry at least five seated persons and a person lying on the stretcher.
