The importance of rescue boats

Titanic is a very classic movie. While people are praising the love between rose and jack, we also noticed how terrible it is to sail at sea without enough preparation.

Navigation is full of challenges, the sea is mysterious and scary, to better protect ourselves in marine emergencies, we need to be prepared for everything. Rescue boats are a very important part of sea navigation. According to SOLAS regulations, every ship sailing at sea must be equipped with a sufficient number of rescue boats to prevent accidents.

The role of rescue boats is to prevent sudden accidents at sea, such as crew falling into the water, ship accidents, etc. Lifeboats can quickly help people in distress get to a safe location. Rescue boats are not like inflation valves. Rescue boats are usually driven by an engine, which can ensure the safety of the crew faster and more safely.

So before we go sailing, get our rescue boat ready. But do you know why rescue boats are always orange? Let me talk about this.

The history of rescue boats

The boat was not orange at the beginning. According to information provided by RNLI, the rescue boats were painted dark blue in the 1800s, but the artists of the Royal Academy did not like this color and changed it to royal blue. In the 1950s, it was mainly composed of red, blue, and white, and then it gradually developed into orange.

From a scientific point of view

After chatting about history, let's analyze why boats are painted orange from an art perspective. We all know that most colors are made by mixing the three primary colors, red, yellow, and blue, forming something called a color wheel in the process.

The sea is blue. From the color wheel, we can clearly see that the opposite of blue is orange, so orange is the contrasting color of blue. Contrasting colors are colors that can be clearly distinguished, so when we encounter danger in the sea and need to be rescued, the blue contrasting color orange becomes our best choice.

Likewise, orange, as a warm color, gives us a sense of safety and warmth when we see it, and makes us feel comfortable in times of danger. When you're in the midst of an accident, there's nothing more reassuring than an orange rescue boat. That's why most rescue boats paint themselves in orange, the most reassuring color to be at sea.

Some other reasons

There are very scary sharks in the sea and we all know how terrifying this creature is! Sharks have existed on Earth as early as 300 million years before the appearance of dinosaurs, and they have been around for more than 500 million years, and they have hardly changed in nearly 100 million years. Studies have shown that mercury is easy to accumulate in sharks, and shark fins contain a certain amount of neurotoxins, so they are potentially harmful to humans. So we pray we don't encounter it when we travel by sea.

There is an interesting saying that sharks are generally more sensitive to orange because there is a hugely venomous orange sea snake in the sea. The poison of this snake is very lethal to sharks, and sharks try to avoid this kind of snake. Due to conditioned reflex, over time, sharks will be sensitive to orange.

Since we discovered this phenomenon, we have modified the color of many diving tools, which can effectively prevent shark color attacks. So the orange rescue boat can keep us away from this dangerous and scary creature when we are in danger at sea!

Rescue boat with a difference

But not all rescue boats are orange, and there are always a few exceptions. Disney patented their yellow lifeboats to match Mickey Mouse's shoes, a Disney color.
